Ananda Lewis, a beloved television personality known for her roles as one of MTV’s first video jockeys and host of shows like “Total Request Live” and “The Ananda Lewis Show,” passed away on Wednesday at the age of 52 after battling breast cancer.

Lewis’s sister, Lakshmi Emory, confirmed her passing, marking the end of a career that spanned over two decades in the entertainment industry. Starting her journey with MTV in 1997, Lewis quickly rose to fame as a video jockey, captivating audiences with her charm and charisma. She went on to host popular shows such as “Total Request Live” and “Hot Zone,” where she interviewed a mix of emerging and established talents.

In 2001, Lewis ventured into the world of talk shows with her own program, “The Ananda Lewis Show,” which aired for a brief period from 2001 to 2002. She later transitioned to become a correspondent for “The Insider,” a spinoff of Entertainment Tonight, from 2004 to 2005. After a hiatus from the spotlight to pursue carpentry, Lewis made a triumphant return as the host of TLC’s “While You Were Out” revival in 2019.

Born in Los Angeles in 1973, Lewis relocated to San Diego after her parents’ divorce and was raised by her mother, sister, and grandmother. She graduated from Howard University in 1995 before kickstarting her career with BET’s Teen Summit, a youth-oriented talk show. Her talent caught the eye of MTV, leading to her breakthrough as a VJ in 1997.

During her time in New York, Lewis became a prominent figure on MTV, hosting shows like “Total Request Live” and “Hot Zone,” where she showcased her interviewing skills and love for music. Her infectious energy and genuine rapport with artists endeared her to viewers, solidifying her status as a fan favorite.
