The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director, Russell Vought, has been under scrutiny for the Trump administration’s controversial attempts to lay off nearly all employees at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and cancel the agency’s contracts. The Federal Reserve’s inspector general is currently reviewing these actions, following a request from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Andy Kim.

Acting Inspector General Fred Gibson confirmed in a letter that the office is investigating workforce reductions at the CFPB and the cancellation of contracts by the new leadership under Russell Vought. Vought’s directives to halt work, lay off staff, and terminate contracts have raised concerns about the legality of his actions and their impact on the agency’s ability to fulfill its mission.

Senators Warren and Kim have called for a thorough review of Vought’s actions, prompting both the Fed inspector general and the Government Accountability Office to investigate the matter. The Government Accountability Office has already committed to examining the situation, while the Fed inspector general’s office has the authority to review agency records, issue subpoenas, and interview personnel.

The Trump administration’s decision to dismiss numerous inspectors general across federal agencies has raised questions about accountability and oversight. However, Michael Horowitz, the incoming watchdog for the Fed and CFPB, has been praised for his previous work uncovering issues within the Justice Department.

The fate of the CFPB now rests on a pending decision from a federal appeals court, which has temporarily halted Vought’s efforts to lay off employees. The court is currently deliberating on the Trump administration’s appeal regarding the agency’s future.

In conclusion, the actions taken by the Trump administration at the CFPB have sparked a wave of investigations and legal battles. The outcome of these proceedings will have significant implications for the agency’s ability to protect consumers and hold companies accountable for their actions. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
