A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine and Columbia University has shed light on the connection between diet and sleep quality. The study, published in the journal Sleep Health, found that consuming more fruits and vegetables during the day was associated with better sleep quality at night.

The researchers recruited healthy young adults to participate in the study. Each participant reported their daily food consumption using an app and wore a wrist monitor to objectively measure their sleep patterns. The researchers specifically looked at “sleep fragmentation,” which reflects how often someone awakens or shifts from deep to light sleep throughout the night.

The results of the study revealed that participants who consumed more fruits and vegetables during the day tended to experience deeper and more uninterrupted sleep at night. Similarly, those who consumed more healthy carbohydrates like whole grains also showed improvements in sleep quality. In fact, the researchers estimated that individuals who followed the CDC-recommended guideline of consuming five cups of fruits and vegetables per day could experience a 16% improvement in sleep quality compared to those who did not consume any fruits or vegetables.

Lead author Esra Tasali, MD, director of the UChicago Sleep Center, emphasized the significance of these findings, stating that dietary modifications could be a natural and cost-effective approach to achieving better sleep. Co-senior author Marie-Pierre St-Onge, Ph.D., director of the Center of Excellence for Sleep & Circadian Research at Columbia, added that small changes in diet can have a significant impact on sleep quality, empowering individuals to take control of their rest.

While further research is needed to establish causation and examine the underlying mechanisms, the current data supports the recommendation of regularly consuming a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables for long-term sleep health. The study highlights the importance of diet in improving sleep quality and underscores the potential benefits of incorporating more fruits and vegetables into one’s daily meals.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the relationship between diet and sleep and offers a promising avenue for individuals looking to enhance their sleep quality through simple dietary changes. By prioritizing a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates, individuals may be able to experience better sleep and reap the numerous health benefits that come with it.
