Youth-led Environmental Activism: A Story of Passion and Purpose
After graduating with her undergraduate degree, Lindi embarked on a two-year internship focusing on climate and land rights with the Association for Rural Land Rights Advocacy (AFRA). Through this experience, she worked on projects aimed at assisting rural communities in navigating the various challenges posed by climate change, such as water scarcity and extreme weather events.
During her time at AFRA, Lindi gained a deeper understanding of land management and environmental policy issues. She came to realize the importance of not only advocating for rights but also holding companies and governments accountable for their environmental impact.
As a member of the Climate Champions for Adaptation Project, Lindi participated in the 2023 Pietermaritzburg hearings for the Climate Change Bill. Additionally, she was actively involved in protests against an unsafe landfill site near Sobantu, supported by the SA Human Rights Commission.
Even after her internship with AFRA ended, Lindi’s passion for environmental activism persisted. Currently pursuing an honors degree in environmental management, she volunteers as the climate justice coordinator and team leader for the South African Youth Climate Change Coalition (SAYCCC).
Dangerous Challenges and Purposeful Pursuits
Lindi believes in the power of collaborative work, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in achieving meaningful impact. Her work with SAYCCC often focuses on policy advocacy, such as holding local municipalities accountable for their climate adaptation efforts.
Despite the dangers associated with environmental activism, particularly in South Africa where activists have faced threats and violence, Lindi remains committed to her cause. She envisions a future where policy translates into tangible results on the ground, such as the implementation of green city policies and sustainable building practices.
Driven by her faith and a sense of purpose, Lindi approaches her work with optimism and determination. She believes in the power of prayer to guide her actions and seeks to inspire others to join her in creating positive change.
