The U.K. government has announced plans to ban junk food adverts online and on television before 9 p.m. in an effort to combat obesity. Public health minister Andrew Gwynne revealed that the new regulations will be implemented from October next year. The aim is to shield children from advertisements for foods high in fat, salt, and sugar, which have been linked to influencing their dietary preferences from a young age.

Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern in the U.K., with statistics showing that over 20% of children aged 4 to 5 were overweight in 2022 to 2023, a number that increased to approximately 37% for children aged 10 to 11. The government’s decision comes amidst a damning report on the state of the National Health Service (NHS) by surgeon Lord Ara Darzi, who warned that the NHS is facing serious challenges due to an increasingly sick population and limited resources.

The NHS has been struggling with rising waiting times for urgent, emergency, and elective care, exacerbated by a lack of investment and a decade of austerity prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inequalities in healthcare access have also widened, further straining the system. Gwynne emphasized the need for a prevention revolution to address preventable illnesses and reduce the burden on health services, highlighting childhood obesity as a key area of concern.

Some local authorities, such as Liverpool and York, have already taken steps to limit junk food advertising in publicly-owned spaces like billboards. The U.K. government’s ban on junk food ads was initially proposed by the previous Conservative-led administration and is one of several public health initiatives promised by the current Labour government. In addition to the junk food ad ban, officials have pledged to introduce a smoking ban that would prohibit the sale of tobacco products to individuals born in or after 2009.

This legislation, similar to one implemented in New Zealand in 2022, aims to deter young people from taking up smoking. However, the smoking ban in New Zealand was scrapped by a new government before it could take effect. The U.K. government is determined to prioritize public health measures to address the pressing challenges facing the healthcare system and improve the well-being of the population.
