The Israeli embassy in New Zealand has closed its doors as part of a global shutdown of the country’s diplomatic missions. This decision comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Israel carrying out an attack on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, prompting a retaliatory response from Iran involving the launch of 100 drones.

Situated on Brandon Street in Wellington, the Embassy of Israel serves not only New Zealand but also Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, and Niue. Additionally, it operates a consulate office in Auckland.

A message posted on the embassy’s website stated, “In light of recent events, Israeli missions worldwide will be temporarily closed, and consular services will be unavailable.” The message also provided instructions for Israelis abroad to report their whereabouts and current status using an online form.

Furthermore, the message outlined safety recommendations for Israelis abroad, advising them to refrain from displaying Jewish or Israeli symbols in public and to avoid participating in large gatherings or events associated with Israel or Jewish communities.

The statement from the deputy chief of mission, Yael Holan, emphasized Israel’s defensive actions, citing concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Holan stated that Israel was compelled to act to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, citing Iran’s increased production of highly enriched uranium.

Israel’s embassy in Sweden also announced a temporary closure of its diplomatic missions worldwide, indicating a coordinated effort to address security concerns. The duration of the closures was not specified.

As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the closure of Israeli embassies underscores the volatile nature of the situation and the imperative of safeguarding diplomatic personnel and nationals.
