The Edmonton Oilers faced another setback in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers, falling behind early once again. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first period, and despite a scoreless second period, the Oilers’ third-period rally fell short in a 5-2 loss.

Defenseman Mattias Ekholm and coach Kris Knoblauch both acknowledged the team’s ongoing struggle with slow starts throughout the series. Ekholm emphasized the need to address the mindset and find a way to start games stronger. Knoblauch echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the difficulty of playing from behind and attributing the loss to critical mistakes made by the team.

Knoblauch specifically pointed out that the Panthers scored two goals off faceoffs that the Oilers had won, highlighting the need for improved execution in crucial moments. In Game 4, the Oilers had managed to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win in overtime, but their comeback efforts in Game 5 were not enough.

Brad Marchand scored twice for the Panthers, with additional goals from Sam Bennett, Sam Reinhart, and Eetu Luostarinen. Connor McDavid and Corey Perry found the back of the net for the Oilers. Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves for Florida, while Calvin Pickard stopped 14 shots for Edmonton.

In a recap of Game 5, Marchand opened the scoring for the Panthers in the first period, followed by a goal from Bennett to give Florida a 2-0 lead. Marchand added another goal in the third period, with McDavid responding for the Oilers shortly after. However, goals from Reinhart and Perry extended the Panthers’ lead, ultimately securing a 5-2 victory with an empty-net goal from Luostarinen.

The Oilers will need to regroup and address their slow starts if they hope to turn the series around in the next game. With the series now at 3-2 in favor of the Panthers, Edmonton will need to come out strong from the opening faceoff to keep their championship hopes alive.
