The rivalry between JPMorgan Chase and American Express in the premium credit card space is about to heat up once again. JPMorgan Chase recently announced a refresh of its popular Sapphire Reserve card, while American Express has teased “major” changes coming to its consumer and business Platinum cards later this year.

The Sapphire Reserve card, known for its travel and dining rewards, gained viral popularity when it was introduced in 2016. In response to JPMorgan’s announcement, American Express has promised its largest ever investment in a card refresh, doubling down on the features that its card members love and introducing new and exciting benefits that will far exceed the annual fee.

American Express has long been a leader in the premium credit card space, offering perks at airlines and hotels along with access to its network of high-end airport lounges. However, JPMorgan’s entry into the market in 2016 with the Sapphire card shook up the industry with a generous sign-on bonus and other incentives.

Industry experts expect both companies to continue to compete by offering extensive perks in travel, dining, and experiences, potentially raising their annual fees as well. The Platinum card currently has a $695 annual fee, while the Sapphire Reserve card has a $550 fee. Rumors have circulated that JPMorgan may be considering raising the annual fee on the Sapphire Reserve card to $795, although a spokesperson declined to comment on the speculation.

The new Platinum card is set to launch in the fall, with American Express President of U.S. Consumer Services, Howard Grosfield, promising a card refresh that will exceed expectations and deliver exceptional value to card members. As the battle between JPMorgan Chase and American Express continues to unfold, cardholders can expect even more enticing rewards and benefits to come.
