Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business and the world

Donald Trump stirred controversy at the G7 summit in Canada by expressing his desire to see Russia reinstated as a member of the group. The US president criticized the decision to exclude Russia following its annexation of Crimea in 2014, stating that it was a “big mistake” that could have prevented the war in Ukraine.

During the summit, Trump also suggested that China should be included in the G7, expanding the group beyond its traditional membership of industrialized economies and liberal democracies. This proposal comes at a time when tensions between the US and China are high due to trade disputes and security concerns.

The summit was marked by discussions on various global issues, including the conflict in the Middle East and the ongoing trade negotiations between the US and Canada. Trump’s meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney focused on resolving trade disputes and strengthening the security relationship between the two countries.

In a separate session, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the G7 leaders to discuss the conflict with Russia. Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to hold a bilateral meeting to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

Despite the serious discussions at the summit, managing Trump’s unpredictable behavior has been a challenge for other G7 leaders. His threats to make Canada the 51st state of the US and his inconsistent positions on diplomacy and trade have added a personal edge to the proceedings.

On the sidelines of the summit, Carney met with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to discuss Canada’s sovereignty and its relationship with the Commonwealth. The leaders of France, Italy, and Germany also joined in informal talks with Carney and Starmer, possibly to coordinate their approach to handling Trump during the summit.

As the summit concluded, Starmer emphasized the need for de-escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict, although no formal statement on the matter was agreed upon by the G7 leaders. Despite the challenges posed by Trump’s leadership style, the G7 members remain committed to finding common ground on global issues and maintaining stability in the international community.
