Charli XCX’s involvement in Prime Video’s “Overcompensating” goes beyond just playing herself on the show. As the executive producer and music producer, she played a crucial role in shaping the music landscape of the eight-part series.

During a guild FYC event, music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg praised Charli XCX for her hands-on approach in the music production process. Weisberg mentioned that Charli was actively involved in spotting sessions, composing, and providing feedback on the score placement in the show.

“Overcompensating,” created by Benito Skinner, follows the journey of Benny, a closeted jock navigating his freshman year of college. Music plays a significant role in the series, with Charli XCX contributing 30 songs, including hits like “Boom Clap” and “Girls Night Out.” Additionally, tracks from artists like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Nicki Minaj are woven throughout the narrative.

Weisberg highlighted that music was intricately woven into the scripts, with each episode being named after a song. This approach helped in capturing the emotional essence of Benny’s experiences and building a cohesive musical backdrop for the show.

One of the standout episodes, titled “Lucky,” featured Britney Spears’ iconic song, which resonated with Skinner’s personal growth journey. Malone and Weisberg shared that securing the rights to the songs was relatively smooth, thanks to Charli XCX’s involvement and the buzz surrounding the show.

In another episode, Charli XCX not only provided music but also made an appearance and performed during a concert scene. Weisberg praised Charli and her team for their professionalism and dedication to the project, even amidst a hectic tour schedule.

While most songs were easily licensed for the series, there was one challenging track related to a pivotal scene in Benny’s storyline. Malone recounted the difficulties in obtaining rights from an elderly rights holder but acknowledged that overall, the clearance process was relatively straightforward.

Overall, Charli XCX’s contributions to “Overcompensating” added depth and authenticity to the music-driven series. Her passion for music and dedication to the project shone through, making the show a standout success in the realm of music-themed television.
