Long Island officials are standing firm on their anti-sanctuary position and are committed to assisting federal immigration authorities, setting themselves apart from other municipalities around the country.

In Nassau and Suffolk counties, law enforcement and elected officials have made it clear that they do not support sanctuary policies for undocumented immigrants. Despite pushback from activists who believe that ICE is overreaching in its crackdown on illegal immigration, officials in both counties have pledged their support to federal immigration authorities.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder emphasized that they will support ICE in their efforts, comparing it to supporting other federal agencies in pursuing criminals. Both counties have stated that they will only assist ICE when directly called upon, with a promise not to conduct raids at sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, or churches.

President Trump’s national crackdown on sanctuary policies is targeting major cities and Democratic-controlled governments. Despite protests against the administration’s stance on immigration, Long Island officials have made it clear that they will cooperate with ICE while maintaining their own policies to ensure the safety of their communities.

Suffolk County officials reiterated their commitment to following established protocols, despite a previous court ruling against their past collaboration with ICE. The ruling found that Suffolk County had violated state law and the Fourth Amendment by holding immigrants past their release dates at ICE’s request.

Recent incidents, including the detainment of a U.S. citizen by ICE agents during a traffic stop, have fueled tensions in the community. Thousands have protested against what they perceive as indiscriminate ICE raids, calling for a more compassionate approach to immigration enforcement.

As the debate over cooperation with ICE continues, state officials are now investigating Nassau’s agreement with federal immigration authorities. Despite the ongoing scrutiny and protests, Long Island officials remain steadfast in their approach to immigration enforcement.

ICE did not respond to requests for comment.
