Erin Patterson, a mushroom cook, is currently on trial for the alleged murder of her ex-husband’s family members. Her lawyer, Barrister Colin Mandy SC, argues that she had no motive to harm them and did not plan to serve them death cap mushrooms.

During the trial, Mr. Mandy emphasized that the prosecution must prove Patterson’s intent to harm her guests, which includes establishing a motive. He disputed claims of animosity between Patterson and her in-laws, citing a resolved dispute over child support that occurred months before the tragic incident.

Furthermore, Mr. Mandy highlighted Patterson’s positive relationship with her in-laws, stating that there was no reason for her to harm them. He pointed out that Patterson’s children were close to the victims, making it illogical for her to cause harm.

In addition, Mr. Mandy refuted the prosecution’s allegations that Patterson had been planning the incident for months. He pointed to Patterson’s transparency about the meal and her cooperation with authorities as evidence of her innocence.

On the other hand, the crown prosecutor, Nanette Rogers SC, argued that Patterson deliberately obtained death cap mushrooms and served them to her guests with the intent to harm them. She claimed that Patterson lied multiple times to cover up her actions and deceive investigators.

The trial is ongoing, and Justice Christopher Beale presides over the case. The prosecution and defense will continue to present their arguments as the trial progresses.
