Remembering Leonard Lauder: A Beauty Icon

Vogue Contributing Editor Shirley Lord has been a beauty editor and author for almost eight decades, beginning her career on Fleet Street at 17 years old. She was the Beauty Director of American Vogue for 16 years and was close with Leonard Lauder for over half a century. Following his death on June 15th, she wrote a reminiscence for Vogue.

Shirley Lord fondly recalls her first meeting with Leonard Lauder and his wife, Evelyn, in her London home many years ago. As the Beauty Director of British Harper’s Bazaar and a columnist for London’s The Evening Standard, little did she know that this encounter would be the beginning of a long-lasting friendship with the Lauder family.

Leonard Lauder, known for his warm personality and family-oriented nature, was deeply devoted to his parents, Joe and Estée Lauder. Shirley remembers how Joe Lauder had unexpectedly moved in with them after a visit to check on his son’s health, never to leave. It was clear from the start that Leonard was destined to lead the Estée Lauder empire, with his mother as the face of the brand.

Leonard’s innovative marketing strategies revolutionized the cosmetics industry, introducing concepts like “gift with purchase” and seasonal packaging. Shirley recalls a humorous incident where Leonard jokingly scolded her for giving product ideas to his mother, fearing the impact on the company’s budget. Despite their close relationship, Shirley learned to steer clear of product suggestions in the future.

Throughout the years, Leonard made several visits to the Vogue office, engaging with the staff and sharing insights into the beauty business. His approachable demeanor and witty charm left a lasting impression on everyone he met, with many wishing he could be their boss.
