Many Southerners are waking up to a frosty morning as temperatures dropped well below zero overnight.
By 7am, Mosgiel was experiencing a bone-chilling -5degC, with a “feels like” temperature of -7 according to MetService.
Becks took the top spot on the cold scale with a freezing -8, followed by Lindis Valley at -7 and Arrowtown at -6.
The NZTA Waka Kotahi and local councils are advising caution on roads in Central Otago and the Queenstown/Lakes areas due to the icy conditions.
Warnings are in effect on SH6 between Gibbston and Kingston, as well as from Wānaka to Haast Pass.
Drivers can expect icy patches on SH8 between Tarras and Omarama, and on SH85 between Ranfurly and Alexandra.
While no specific alerts have been issued for Dunedin motorists, icy conditions are still a concern around the city.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council reported thick fog and icy roads in various areas. In response, grit has been spread on Malaghans Rd, Littles Rd, and Dalefield Rd in Queenstown, with extra caution advised for Fernhill residents.
Despite the challenging conditions, there have been no reports of accidents on Southern roads this morning. However, police are reminding drivers to drive carefully, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and proceed with caution.
