SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son has put forward an ambitious plan to establish a $1 trillion artificial intelligence and robotics complex in Arizona. This project could potentially include the creation of a free-trade zone and the participation of TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker. The goal of this initiative is to bring high-tech manufacturing to the United States on a large scale.

Sources familiar with the concept have revealed that Son has discussed the plan with US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and has engaged with local and federal politicians to secure potential tax incentives. While the final scope of the project is still uncertain and will depend on interest from tech companies, it represents a significant effort to bolster the tech industry in the US.

The Arizona project is just one of Son’s ambitious ventures, as he has previously committed $500 billion to the Stargate project, aimed at expanding US data centers and AI infrastructure in collaboration with OpenAI, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX. Funding for the Stargate project is structured through project finance, a model that may also be utilized for the Arizona complex.

Son has established himself as a key player in the AI space, forging partnerships with companies like Nvidia and OpenAI through his Vision Fund investment vehicles. His vision for the Arizona project involves leveraging these partnerships to drive innovation and growth in the tech sector.

Additionally, Son has proposed the creation of free-trade zones in multiple US states to attract investment from countries like Taiwan, hinting at the potential for similar projects beyond Arizona. He has also floated the idea of a joint US-Japan investment vehicle to facilitate large-scale investments in technology and infrastructure across the US.

As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how Son’s vision for a cutting-edge AI and robotics complex in Arizona unfolds and the impact it could have on the tech industry in the United States. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.
