Director Danny Boyle Uses iPhones to Film ’28 Years Later’ Sequel

Director Danny Boyle, known for shooting “28 Days Later” on Canon digital cameras, opted for iPhones to film the sequel “28 Years Later,” which just opened this weekend. The use of iPhones allowed Boyle to capture startling violence and create unique action scenes.

Boyle revealed to Wired that a rig holding 20 iPhone Pro Max cameras was used to create a “poor man’s bullet time” effect, providing different angles for the brutal action sequences in the movie. Even without the rig, the iPhone served as the principal camera after adjusting settings and adding accessories.

The decision to film with iPhones was driven by the need for flexibility and mobility, especially when shooting in remote areas of Northumbria that resembled landscapes from centuries ago. Boyle emphasized that the iPhone allowed the team to move quickly and lightly, preserving the untouched beauty of the countryside.
