Summer is finally here, and with it comes the scorching heat that makes a day at the beach so appealing. As temperatures soared to 94 degrees, I decided to spend my Sunday soaking up the sun and enjoying the cool ocean breeze. It was a perfect day to relax and unwind, but it also served as a stark reminder of the importance of staying cool and hydrated during the hot summer months.

While I was at the beach, I couldn’t help but think about water safety and the importance of knowing what drowning actually looks like. This led me to revisit an old explainer from Slate that delves into the signs of drowning and how to recognize when someone is in trouble in the water. It’s a crucial reminder for beachgoers and swimmers to stay vigilant and aware of the dangers that can lurk beneath the surface.

In other news, recent layoffs at the FDA have put Marty Makary’s bid for “radical transparency” in jeopardy. Makary, who has been a vocal advocate for frequent and transparent meetings of independent panels that advise the FDA on regulatory decisions, has seen his efforts hampered by the loss of key staff members at the agency. The recent cuts have left many advisory committee staff members, including the drug center’s conflict of interest team, without jobs, making it difficult to plan and run meetings effectively.

The lack of staff has also impacted the agency’s ability to root out potential conflicts of interest among committee members, a key component of Makary’s push for transparency. Meetings have been postponed, and conflict of interest screenings are now being handled by lawyers in the commissioner’s office. This has raised concerns about the agency’s ability to maintain integrity and impartiality in its decision-making process.

Despite these challenges, Makary remains committed to his vision of transparency and accountability at the FDA. However, the recent layoffs have underscored the need for adequate staffing and resources to support these efforts. As the agency grapples with the fallout from the cuts, it is clear that maintaining public trust and confidence will require a concerted effort to address these issues and ensure that conflicts of interest are properly managed.

In conclusion, as we embrace the summer season and all the joys it brings, let us also remain vigilant and mindful of the importance of water safety and transparency in regulatory decision-making. By staying informed and engaged, we can help create a safer and more transparent future for all.
