Arturo De La Mora and Karena Silva (Chicago Police Department, Dignity Memorial)

Chicago Man Sentenced to 52 Years for Murdering Girlfriend While on Electronic Monitoring

A Chicago man, Arturo De La Mora, has been sentenced to 52 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Karena Silva. This tragic incident occurred while De La Mora was on electronic monitoring for a felony gun case. Judge Charles Burns imposed the sentence after De La Mora pleaded guilty to two counts of murder. According to Illinois law, murder sentences must be served in full, with no possibility of early release for good behavior.

De La Mora had a history of abusing Silva, his 30-year-old girlfriend. Records indicate that he had been released from prison in April 2021 after serving time for assaulting Silva and for a separate case involving the alleged sexual abuse and kidnapping of another individual.

In June 2022, Chicago police stopped De La Mora while he was driving Silva’s car, which had expired license plates. During the stop, officers discovered a loaded handgun in his possession. De La Mora was detained but later posted bail, allowing him to return home with an ankle monitor.

Tragically, while on electronic monitoring, De La Mora drove to a hospital on February 28, 2023, claiming he had been shot. Police responded to a residence on West 69th Street, where they found Silva dead from a gunshot wound. Evidence, including DNA on the gun and gunshot residue on De La Mora’s waistband, linked him to the crime scene.

De La Mora was arrested on the day of Silva’s death, but murder charges were not approved until August 2024, nearly 18 months later. During his detention, De La Mora allegedly attempted to escape from police custody and assaulted an officer.

It is a tragic case that highlights the dangers of domestic violence and the need for stricter monitoring of individuals with violent histories. The victim, Karena Silva, will be remembered, and justice has been served with the sentencing of Arturo De La Mora.
