Human remains have been discovered at a residence in Wellington’s Ōwhiro Bay. According to RNZ, the remains were unearthed by a homeowner while gardening on Sunday.
The age, gender, and duration of time the person had been there remain unknown at this point, with police stating that the identification process will be lengthy.
Detective Senior Sergeant Lee Underhill urged anyone with information regarding the identity of the remains and how they ended up at the location to contact the authorities.
Police officers were observed examining soil in the front yard of a property on Happy Valley Road on Monday. The area was cordoned off, and officers, including one in a hazardous materials suit, worked on-site throughout the day.
As of Tuesday, there were no police present at the property. The owner declined to provide a comment and referred RNZ to the police for inquiries.
