Man Admits to Stabbing Grocery Store Manager in Edgewater

A 61-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing a grocery store manager in Edgewater. The incident took place at the Aldi store located at 6221 North Broadway in the early afternoon of June 14.

According to prosecutors, John Brown stabbed the 41-year-old assistant manager in the thigh during an attempted shoplifting incident and then fled the scene. Police responded promptly and found Brown at the Granville Red Line station. He was seen running along the platform with a knife or tool in his hand, as stated in a Chicago Police Department report.

As officers closed in on him, Brown jumped onto the train tracks and fled south, dropping an object into the Whole Foods parking lot below. Law enforcement managed to apprehend Brown and recover the knife used in the attack.

During his arrest, Brown reportedly confessed to the stabbing, shouting, “I stabbed the [expletive] out of him. He put his hands on me. I stabbed the [expletive] out of him,” and making additional statements admitting to his actions. He has since been uncooperative with authorities, refusing to provide his name, decline fingerprinting, and repeatedly declining to appear in court. Brown is currently representing himself in court.

Prosecutors have charged Brown with armed robbery, robbery, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and aggravated battery of a merchant.
