A major victory was achieved in the fight against child sex trafficking in Florida with the successful rescue of dozens of children, as announced by officials on Monday.

The operation, named Operation Dragon Eye, was led by the US Marshals Office for the Central District of Florida, with support from the state Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Office of Statewide Prosecution (OSP).

A total of 20 agencies collaborated in a joint effort to locate 60 critically missing children and apprehend suspects involved in trafficking, drug-related crimes, and child endangerment.

Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized the importance of protecting children, stating that those who victimize children will face consequences and be prosecuted.

The children rescued in the operation ranged in age from 9 to 17, with many of them considered at risk of being exploited. The US Marshals Service defines “critically missing” children as those vulnerable to crimes of violence or other elevated risk factors such as substance abuse, sexual exploitation, and domestic violence.

The operation revealed the harsh realities of sex trafficking, with some young girls found to be pregnant, including one carrying the child of her trafficker.

Immediate medical evaluations and psychological support were provided to each rescued child, with long-term care plans put in place to ensure their well-being.

US Marshal William Berger highlighted the unique aspect of the operation, which included debriefing and providing physical and psychological care to the rescued children, with follow-up assistance to prevent them from returning to dangerous situations.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) played a crucial role in the operation, with Commissioner Mark Glass reassuring parents of missing children that the department is committed to never stop searching until every child is brought home safely.

Eight individuals were arrested during the operation, facing charges such as human trafficking, child endangerment, and drug-related offenses. The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges expected to follow.

Sex trafficking remains a significant issue in Florida, with the state ranking among the top three in the nation for reported human trafficking cases. In response, Florida leaders have increased funding and legislative efforts to combat trafficking and support victims.

Governor Ron DeSantis recently allocated funds to expand emergency shelter beds and staff support for trafficking victims, demonstrating a commitment to addressing this critical issue in the state.
