During a speech at the City Club of Chicago, Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Stacy Davis Gates made a bold statement, claiming that children belong to the union. She referenced James Baldwin and expressed the union’s commitment to educating, nurturing, and protecting children.

Davis Gates addressed criticisms of the union, stating, “CTU thinks all children belong to it. And they’re a socialist conspiracy ideology.” Despite controversies surrounding her previous statements, Davis Gates emphasized the union’s support for children and their well-being.

Invited to speak at the City Club of Chicago, Davis Gates highlighted the union’s role in advocating for children’s rights and providing a supportive environment for their growth and development.

Corey DeAngelis, a school choice advocate, criticized the performance of Chicago’s public school system, contrasting it with the union’s claims of prioritizing children’s education. DeAngelis pointed out the disparities in educational outcomes and called attention to the challenges faced by students in the city.

Amid contract negotiations with Chicago Public Schools, the CTU demanded over $50 billion for wage hikes and other benefits, raising concerns about the financial implications for the education system.

Chicago’s enrollment crisis was also highlighted, with a significant decline in student numbers and high costs per student. The city faces challenges in maintaining the efficiency and affordability of its public schools, affecting the quality of education provided to students.

Despite these challenges, the CTU remains committed to advocating for children’s rights and ensuring their access to quality education. The union’s stance on children’s well-being and educational opportunities continues to be a subject of debate and scrutiny.
