Exploring the Design Process: A Look at “Process in Practice” Exhibition

Process in Practice, the latest exhibition at Pratt Manhattan Gallery, shines a spotlight on the intricate and diverse journeys of design. Opening on Friday, June 27, this show features the work of esteemed alumni from Pratt Institute‘s graduate and undergraduate Communications Design programs, offering visitors a glimpse into the often-hidden steps behind finalized design outcomes.

Curated by Ginger Gregg Duggan and Judith Hoos Fox of c2-curatorsquared, with exhibition design by alumna Aryn Beitz, Process in Practice challenges the notion of design as purely a visual end result, instead focusing on research, experimentation, iteration, and innovation. The exhibition aims to showcase the complexity of the design process and the varied practices that define the field today.

“By encouraging designers to present the evolution of a project rather than just the final product, we wanted to emphasize the dynamic problem-solving and multi-layered storytelling that design encompasses,” said Duggan and Fox.

Featuring a diverse range of design disciplines, from branding and type design to social impact work and fine art, the alumni showcased in Process in Practice represent the vast potential of design. Their work spans across different disciplines and locations, including public art in New York, children’s book storytelling in Mexico, type innovation in Bangkok, sustainability in publishing and user experience, and more.

The lineup of participants includes Aryn Beitz, Joseph Cuillier III, Vincent Drayne, David Good, Beatriz Gutiérrez Hernández, Xinyi Li, Kadir Nelson, Snigdha Pamula, design collective Partner & Partners, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, Stefan Sagmeister, and Anuthin Wongsunkakon.

A collaborative effort between Pratt’s Communications Design department, led by chairs Meta Newhouse and Gaia Hwang, and Pratt’s Department of Exhibitions, the exhibition underscores the Institute’s enduring commitment to design as a catalyst for positive change and education that nurtures creative leaders.

Process in Practice will be on view at Pratt Manhattan Gallery from June 27 to September 6, with a public reception on Thursday, June 26, from 6 to 8pm. You can find Pratt Manhattan Gallery at 144 West 14th Street, New York, NY 10011, open from 11am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
