Hot tubs and saunas have long been popular for their ability to relax and soothe sore muscles. However, a recent study conducted by researchers at the Bowerman Sports Science Center at the University of Oregon suggests that hot tubs may offer greater health benefits compared to saunas.

The study compared the physiological effects of soaking in a hot tub to sitting in a traditional dry heat sauna or a far-infrared sauna. Researchers found that soaking in hot water can help lower blood pressure, stimulate the immune system, and improve the body’s response to heat stress over time. These beneficial effects can last beyond the time spent in the heat treatment.

Lead author of the study, Jessica Atencio, explained, “Increasing body temperature causes an increase in blood flow, and just the force of blood moving across your vessels is beneficial for your vascular health.” The study looked at 10 men and 10 women who ranged in age from 20 to 28 years old, aiming to isolate the physiological responses to each heating method in a young, healthy population.

The research team monitored various factors such as body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, and immune cell populations before, during, and after subjects participated in each heat therapy. The results showed that hot water immersion had the most significant impact on increasing core body temperature, leading to positive changes in blood flow and vascular health.

While regular exercise can provide similar health benefits, heat therapy offers a viable option for individuals who are unable or unwilling to exercise. Christopher Minson, the director of the Bowerman Center, emphasized the importance of being smart and safe about incorporating heat therapy into one’s routine, especially for those who may have existing health conditions.

In conclusion, the study highlights the potential health benefits of hot tubs over saunas and underscores the importance of moderation and safety when incorporating heat therapy into a wellness routine. Whether used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with exercise, heat therapy can provide a peaceful and relaxing experience that contributes to overall health and well-being.
