Man Charged with Mugging Two Victims in Chinatown

Willie Greenwood, 27, is facing new charges for allegedly mugging a victim in Chinatown on the same day he was accused of robbing another person after they stepped off a casino shuttle bus earlier this year.

The latest incident occurred late on March 12 when Greenwood approached a 48-year-old man near 23rd Street and Wentworth. He tapped the victim on the shoulder and demanded money. When the victim tried to flee, Greenwood punched him in the face, causing him to fall to the ground. He then revealed a handgun in his waistband, prompting the victim to hand over approximately $200 in cash.

Chicago police apprehended Greenwood at 26th and California last week following his court appearance for the initial robbery case.

In March, Greenwood was initially arrested by a CPD tactical unit in Chinatown, targeting a vehicle associated with three earlier robberies of individuals disembarking from a casino shuttle. All the victims reported being targeted after leaving the casino.

During a patrol, officers spotted Greenwood driving a black Hyundai Tucson resembling the car linked to the previous robberies. A search of his vehicle yielded a BB gun pistol in the glove compartment. Shortly after, a Chinatown security officer reported a 65-year-old man had been robbed, with the victim recounting a masked man brandishing a gun and demanding money.

Surveillance footage showed Greenwood exiting his car and running down a street at the time of the robbery, returning moments later. Despite initially denying involvement and claiming to be searching for his girlfriend’s car, Greenwood was found with $400 in cash, including bills matching the victim’s description.

Greenwood was initially detained on an armed robbery charge in March but was released in April. However, in a recent court appearance for the new robbery charge, Judge Deidre Dyer denied the state’s detention petition and released Greenwood on electronic monitoring.
