Chicago Police Seek Help Identifying Suspect in South Shore Murder

Chicago police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man who may be responsible for the murder of Alonzo “Zo” Smith in South Shore earlier this month. Smith, a 58-year-old resident of the area, was tragically shot and killed in the 7800 block of South Merrill in the early hours of June 3.

Witnesses reported hearing two men arguing before gunshots rang out, followed by the sound of someone pleading, “Why you gotta shoot?” Smith was found lying in the front yard of a home, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Described as a good man who was loved by many in the community, Smith’s senseless death has left those who knew him devastated.

In an effort to apprehend the suspect, Chicago Police Department has released high-quality surveillance images and video captured by CTA cameras at the 79th Street and Roosevelt Red Line stations. The footage shows the suspect, who later changed into dark clothing and was spotted on a CTA bus.

Area Two detectives are leading the investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Those who may have pertinent details are encouraged to contact the detectives at 312-747-8271 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com, referencing case number JJ279248.

The community is rallying together to seek justice for Alonzo Smith and bring closure to his loved ones. As the investigation continues, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any information that may lead to the apprehension of the suspect.
