Man Pleads Guilty to Beating Victim to Death Over Counterfeit Money in Drug Deal

A man accused of brutally beating another man to death over counterfeit money in a drug deal has pleaded guilty in exchange for a 25-year sentence. Jacquail Jones, 25, was already out on bail for a stolen motor vehicle case when he committed the heinous crime.

The incident took place in a vacant lot on the corner of Chicago and Ridgeway avenues in Humboldt Park. Despite the area being designated as a “safety zone” with strict rules against gambling, drugs, and guns, the tragic event unfolded on November 9, 2022, around 5:40 p.m.

Jones allegedly used a brick or rock to fatally beat 52-year-old Michael Foley after discovering that Foley had given him fake money during a drug transaction. Foley succumbed to blunt force trauma to the head the following day, with his injuries initially leading authorities to believe he had been shot.

Surveillance video footage captured Jones following Foley from a nearby convenience store to the vacant lot. Once there, Jones attacked Foley from behind, causing him to fall to the ground. The video purportedly shows Jones stomping on Foley’s head and repeatedly striking him with an object found in the lot.

After the vicious assault, Jones nonchalantly returned to the convenience store, purchased a bag of chips, and calmly walked away. Police were able to identify Jones through the surveillance footage and subsequently arrested him. During police questioning, Jones admitted to the crime, citing the fake money as his motive.

At the sentencing, Judge Timothy Joyce handed down a 25-year prison term to Jones. Prosecutors decided to drop the stolen motor vehicle case that Jones was previously facing.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of adhering to the law. Justice has been served in this case, but the impact of such senseless acts reverberates throughout the community.
