20 firearms recovered in multi-agency gunrunning investigation in Chicago; 5 charged

20 firearms recovered in multi-agency gunrunning investigation in Chicago; 5 charged

Five individuals, including four adults and a juvenile, are facing gunrunning charges following a thorough investigation into a firearms trafficking operation. The investigation, led by the Chicago Police Department, uncovered a scheme that trafficked guns from Indianapolis to Chicago. As a result of the probe, authorities were able to seize 20 firearms and three machine gun conversion devices, which are illegal switches that enable semi-automatic firearms to fire multiple rounds with a single trigger pull.

The individuals involved in the gunrunning operation are Justin Anderson, Montez Wells Jr., Todd Williams, Jaylen Powell, and a 17-year-old male. The Chicago Crime Gun Intelligence Center, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, spearheaded the investigation, with support from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

During detention hearings for the adult defendants, more details about the investigation and the roles of the accused individuals will be disclosed. According to the Chicago Police Department, the charges filed against each individual are as follows:

Justin Anderson, 19
– One felony count of gunrunning 11 to 20 firearms
– One felony count of gunrunning
– One felony count of unlawful use of a machine gun in a vehicle
– One felony count of unlawful sale of a firearm by a felon

Montez Wells Jr., 18
– One felony count of gunrunning 11 to 20 firearms
– One felony count of gunrunning
– One felony count of unlawful use of a machine gun in a vehicle

Todd Williams, 23
– One felony count of gunrunning 11 to 20 firearms
– One felony count of gunrunning
– One felony count of unlawful use of a machine gun in a vehicle
– One felony count of aggravated fleeing with property damage

Jaylen Powell, 18

– Two felony counts of selling a firearm without a valid FOID

This investigation highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat illegal firearms trafficking and ensure the safety of communities. It serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent gun control measures to prevent such criminal activities.
