Lena Waithe and Brandon Flynn are set to appear in a new short film titled “Reclaim the Flag,” which explores the American flag as a symbol of unity for all Americans, with a specific focus on the LGBTQ community. Directed by designer Alexis Bittar and produced by Oscar winner Bruce Cohen and Bittar, the 30-minute film will premiere on July 17.

The star-studded lineup of interviews in the film includes prominent figures from Hollywood, politics, media, and fashion such as Gus Kenworthy, Jonathan Capehart, Marc Jacobs, Jim Parsons, and George Takei. The trailer for the film poses the question, “What does the American flag symbolize to you?” Lena Waithe remarks in the trailer, “Depending on how the United States feels about you, will depend on how you feel about the flag.”

Songwriter and producer Justin Tranter adds, “How do I feel about the United States? She’s messy, she’s scary, she’s beautiful.” Brandon Flynn expresses concern about the erasure of queer progress, while Harper Steele from “Will & Harper” shares feelings of being under attack.

The film aims to address the increasing division surrounding the American flag over the past decade, presenting a documentary that seeks to reclaim it for all Americans. Director Alexis Bittar explains, “I wanted to make a documentary about reclaiming it for all Americans — by bringing together 50 leaders from the LGBTQ+ community to share their reflections and hopes.”

Producer Bruce Cohen expressed gratitude towards the artists and activists who participated in the film, acknowledging the power of their ideas to spark conversations and promote healing within the community and the country. Executive producers Jason Weinberg and Mickalene Thomas, along with co-producers Arianne Phillips, Frank Godchaux, and Steve Madden, contribute to the film’s production.
