Multiple cities in Southern California have decided to cancel or postpone their Fourth of July celebrations due to concerns about potential ICE targeting of large public gatherings. Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Cudahy, Bell Gardens, and Whittier are among the cities where events have been affected after residents expressed worries.

According to The New York Times, over 2,000 immigrants in the Los Angeles area have been arrested since early June, following immigration raids that sparked protests and a strong law enforcement and military presence. Reports of arrests at taco trucks, worksites, and even immigration courts have led many Latino residents to avoid going out in public, regardless of their legal status.

Huntington Park has temporarily halted summer events for 30 days due to the disruptions caused by ICE activity, as stated in a city announcement. The City of Cudahy also announced on social media that its Independence Day Celebration will be postponed due to recent events and concerns for resident safety.

Bell Gardens canceled events between last week and July 10 out of caution regarding federal immigration enforcement activities, as announced on Instagram. Similarly, Fourth of July events in Boyle Heights, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, and northeast Los Angeles have been rescheduled to August due to ongoing immigration raids, announced by Councilmember Ysabel Jurado’s office.

The fear and anxiety caused by the ICE raids have impacted many Latinos in the U.S., with both documented and undocumented immigrants expressing reluctance to leave their homes out of fear of being caught in a raid. Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores has strongly condemned the ICE raids, describing them as a “campaign of domestic terror.”

Overall, the situation has raised concerns about the safety and peace of mind of the community, prompting city officials to prioritize resident well-being. The ongoing circumstances have led to the postponement or cancellation of various summer events in Southern California, reflecting the impact of immigration enforcement activities on local communities.
