Australian Airline Qantas Suffers Data Breach Impacting Six Million Passengers

In a recent announcement, Australian airline giant Qantas revealed that it fell victim to a data breach that compromised the personal information of at least six million passengers. The breach, which occurred on June 30, involved a cybercriminal targeting one of the airline’s call centers and gaining unauthorized access to customer data stored in its systems. The stolen information includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and frequent flyer numbers.

Qantas is not the only airline to have been targeted by cyberattacks in recent weeks. The airline industry has been facing a wave of breaches attributed to a group known as Scattered Spider, known for their sophisticated tactics in infiltrating the networks of large companies. Canadian airline WestJet was also a victim of a data breach in June, with media reports linking the incident to Scattered Spider. Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines reported a data breach just last week.

While Google’s security unit Mandiant has stated that it is still unclear whether the Qantas hack is directly linked to Scattered Spider, they have cautioned airlines to remain vigilant against social engineering attacks. Mandiant emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of security awareness to protect against potential cyber threats.
