Rob McElhenney, known for his role in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” recently announced that he will be changing his name to “Rob Mac.” In a video shared on social media, the 48-year-old actor explained that the decision was mainly a stage name to make things simpler, as he has spent a significant amount of time correcting people on the pronunciation and spelling of his last name.

While McElhenney acknowledged that the name change may come off as “kind of douchey,” he emphasized the practicality of it. He delved into the history of his last name, rooted in Irish heritage, but highlighted that the spelling has evolved over generations. Interestingly, he revealed that his great-great-grandmother’s last name was originally spelled “McIlhenny,” and the current spelling was given by a government official.

Despite the sentimental value attached to his family name, McElhenney felt that it was time for a change. He expressed that most people already refer to him as “Rob Mac,” and his family’s love and acceptance are what truly matter to him. The actor humorously suggested alternative names like Marion, Jerome, or Eric, but ultimately settled on “Rob Mac” to simplify things.

In an interview with Variety, McElhenney confirmed that he had legally filed for the name change in Los Angeles. His wife, Kaitlin Olson, joked that their children and herself were not thrilled about the decision, as they share the same last name. However, McElhenney’s reasoning for the change resonated with many, as it streamlines communication and avoids confusion.

The couple’s relationship timeline is a testament to their Hollywood love story. Meeting on the set of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” in 2005, McElhenney and Olson eventually started dating a year later. Their journey from co-stars to husband and wife has been a heartwarming tale for fans of the show.

As McElhenney embraces his new moniker, “Rob Mac,” fans and loved ones alike will continue to support him in this decision. While the name change may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things, it represents a personal choice for the actor to simplify his identity in a world filled with complexities. The evolution of Rob McElhenney to Rob Mac is a testament to embracing change and moving forward with confidence.
