Amazon to Shut Down Freevee App in August, Redirects Users to Prime Video

Amazon has announced plans to shut down its standalone Freevee app in August, as stated in an in-app notice to users. The free, ad-supported streaming service is now directing viewers to continue watching Freevee content on Prime Video.

According to the notice, Prime Video will be the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV. The Freevee app will remain accessible until August 2025. Users can continue enjoying their favorite Free Originals and a library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, without the need for a subscription. To get started, users can download Prime Video and sign in with their Amazon account.

The decision to shut down the Freevee app doesn’t come as a surprise, as Amazon confirmed back in November 2024 that it would be phasing out the service and integrating its content into Prime Video.

In a statement, Amazon mentioned that there will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a wide range of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members. This content includes select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, and a variety of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video.

Amazon’s decision to shut down the Freevee service is seen as a strategic move to streamline its offerings and consolidate content on a single platform. By merging Freevee into Prime Video, Amazon aims to provide a more unified streaming experience for its users.

Originally launched in 2019 as IMDb TV, Freevee is available in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria. The service was rebranded as Freevee in 2022.

Some of the popular original series on Freevee include Emmy-nominated reality comedy show “Jury Duty,” crime show “Bosch: Legacy,” soap opera “Neighbours,” and more. These shows can now be accessed on Prime Video under the “Watch for Free” section.

The announcement of Freevee’s shutdown comes on the heels of a recent Nielsen report, which revealed that streaming services have surpassed both cable and network television in total viewership among U.S. audiences for the first time in May. Free streaming services like PlutoTV, Roku Channel, and Tubi have played a significant role in driving the overall success of streaming, accounting for a combined 5.7% of total TV viewing in May.
