Governor Gavin Newsom Issues Warning to Media Companies Amid Paramount Settlement with Trump Administration

Governor Gavin Newsom of California has issued a stern warning to U.S. media companies, urging them not to “sell out” to the Trump administration. This caution comes in the wake of a controversial $16 million settlement between Paramount Global’s CBS News and former President Donald Trump regarding a report aired on “60 Minutes.”

The settlement, which has raised eyebrows in the industry, is seen by many as a quid pro quo for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to approve Paramount’s acquisition by Skydance. While both companies have denied any link between the settlement and the acquisition, Governor Newsom expressed skepticism during a press conference, questioning the timing and motives behind the settlement.

The lawsuit, based on an interview between “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker and former Vice President Kamala Harris, has been widely criticized for lacking merit under the First Amendment. However, it is just one in a series of legal actions taken by Trump against media outlets, leading to settlements aimed at safeguarding business interests.

Governor Newsom, who himself has filed a lawsuit against Fox News for defamation, emphasized the importance of upholding ethical journalism standards. He urged media organizations to resist threats from the Trump administration and to prioritize moral authority over formal authority.

During a celebration in Burbank, where he signed an expansion of California’s film and TV tax credit, Governor Newsom highlighted the state’s efforts to combat the Trump administration’s aggressive detention practices and attempts to undermine the rule of law. He emphasized the need for legal action to protect citizens’ rights and prevent further erosion of democracy.

In conclusion, Governor Newsom criticized the theatrics of Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, calling them “flim-flammers” and vowing to push back against their tactics. He urged media companies to stand firm against pressure from the administration and to prioritize truth and integrity in their reporting.

As California continues to navigate the challenges posed by the Trump administration, Governor Newsom remains committed to upholding the state’s values and defending against any threats to democracy and the rule of law. Through collaboration with legal experts and a steadfast commitment to justice, California aims to protect its residents and uphold the principles of a free and fair society.
