Google CEO Sundar Pichai Emphasizes the Transformative Power of AI at UN Summit of the Future
Speaking at the UN Summit of the Future on Saturday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the significant impact of artificial intelligence (AI) as “the most transformative technology yet.” He also announced the establishment of a new fund dedicated to AI education and training on a global scale.
Pichai outlined four key opportunities where AI can contribute to sustainable development: facilitating access to information in diverse languages, expediting scientific breakthroughs, offering early warnings and monitoring systems for climate-related disasters, and driving economic growth.
While acknowledging the potential risks associated with AI, such as the proliferation of deep fakes, Pichai did not delve into the technology’s environmental impact during his address.
In an effort to bridge the global “AI divide,” Pichai disclosed plans for the creation of a $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund. This fund aims to make AI education and training accessible to communities worldwide, in collaboration with local nonprofit organizations and NGOs.
Furthermore, Pichai advocated for the implementation of “smart product regulation” that addresses potential harms and counteracts protectionist tendencies at a national level. He warned that without proper regulation, there is a risk of widening the AI divide and constraining the full benefits of AI technology.
