Several workers at the New World Victoria Park store in central Auckland may soon be facing job cuts after a devastating fire destroyed the building two weeks ago. The fire, which took over 10 hours to extinguish, caused significant damage, including a collapsed ceiling.

With over 180 employees at the supermarket, First Union, representing around 40 workers, disclosed that a proposal to make all staff redundant is currently being considered. While some may have the opportunity to transfer to other stores, the process of disestablishing roles at the affected store is already in motion.

Foodstuffs North Island has been actively supporting staff in finding new roles, including positions at nearby stores, the support center, and distribution centers. As a response to the fire, the opening of New World Pt Chevalier has been expedited and is now scheduled to open on August 19 instead of the initial September 9 date.

Chris Quin, the chief executive of Foodstuffs North Island, acknowledged the extensive damage to the Victoria Park store and estimated a two-year duration for the rebuild process. The opening of New World Pt Chevalier aims to provide a nearby alternative for affected shoppers in the surrounding areas.

Efforts are being made to ensure that staff from the Victoria Park store have opportunities at the new Pt Chevalier supermarket or are redeployed within the company. The company is committed to supporting affected employees during this transition period and is actively recruiting them across their network.

Foodstuffs North Island has completed the fire investigation and will soon begin removing damaged sections of the building to allow for the safe clearance of stock and equipment from the store.
