The Fourth of July is a time for celebration and fun, but it’s also a time when many people are playing with fireworks. While fireworks can be exciting and beautiful, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2024 there were 14,700 reported injuries related to fireworks, including 11 deaths and 1,700 emergency room visits due to sparklers. These numbers represent a significant increase compared to previous years.

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to fireworks is to be careful about who handles them. Children should never play with fireworks unsupervised, and even sparklers, which may seem harmless, can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also essential to avoid mixing fireworks with alcohol or drugs, as using fireworks requires full attention and concentration.

Using only appropriate fireworks is another crucial safety measure. Illegal fireworks can be dangerous and may not have proper safety precautions in place. Stick to consumer-grade fireworks and always follow the directions and warnings that come with them. Keeping water nearby is also essential in case of any accidents or fires.

It’s important to never use fireworks indoors or in enclosed spaces. Make sure you have plenty of open space away from flammable materials before lighting any fireworks. Proper protective gear, such as eyewear and covering exposed skin, should also be worn when handling fireworks.

When lighting fireworks, follow proper procedures such as lighting one device at a time and moving back quickly. Never try to relight or handle fireworks that have not ignited fully. It’s crucial to maintain a safe distance from fireworks and never point them at anyone.

By following these safety tips and guidelines, you can enjoy a fun and festive Fourth of July celebration while also staying safe and preventing accidents. Let’s make sure that this year’s Independence Day is a memorable one for all the right reasons.
