OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has recently announced that he will be taking on the role of CEO at Safe Superintelligence, the AI startup he launched in 2024. This decision comes after the departure of Daniel Gross, the startup’s co-founder and former CEO, on June 29. In a post on X, Sutskever confirmed the leadership changes, with Daniel Levy, another co-founder, stepping into the role of president.

The news of Gross leaving Safe Superintelligence sparked rumors of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s interest in acquiring the startup, along with his investing partner Nat Friedman. Despite the speculations, Sutskever emphasized that the focus remains on advancing the work at Safe Superintelligence. He expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities and their commitment to building safe superintelligence.

Safe Superintelligence distinguishes itself as the world’s first “straight-shot SSI lab,” solely dedicated to developing safe superintelligence technology. Sutskever founded the startup after his tenure at OpenAI, where he was involved in the removal of CEO Sam Altman. On the other hand, Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new unit within Meta, is expected to drive technology innovation across the company’s product range. The memo released by Zuckerberg highlighted Meta’s proficiency in reaching billions of users and their early successes in AI wearables.

With Gross potentially joining Meta, leveraging his experience leading AI teams at Apple, the move aligns with Meta’s strategy of recruiting top talent for its AI initiatives. Sutskever, on the other hand, will face new challenges as the CEO of Safe Superintelligence, including securing funding and attracting top talent. Despite his background as OpenAI’s chief scientist, the CEO role will require him to navigate the business aspects of the startup while overseeing the technical team’s operations.

In conclusion, the transition in leadership at Safe Superintelligence marks a pivotal moment for the AI startup as it continues to pursue its mission of developing safe superintelligence technology. As Sutskever takes on the role of CEO, the focus remains on furthering the company’s vision and advancing the field of AI in a responsible and ethical manner.
