A New Zealander who was present inside a Melbourne synagogue during an alleged arson attack on Friday expressed concern over the escalation from “hate speech into violence”. Flammable liquid was poured over a door and set alight while about 20 people were inside the East Melbourne Synagogue at the time of the incident.

Counter-terrorism police have apprehended a 34-year-old suspect. Concurrently, on the same night in Melbourne, around 20 masked individuals harassed diners at an Israeli-owned restaurant, and three cars were set on fire outside a local business.

One of the individuals present in the Melbourne synagogue during the attack was New Zealander Murray Meltzer. He described the service as “very tranquil” before the incident occurred. The bell of the synagogue began ringing unusually, prompting swift action from the congregants as smoke started to fill the sanctuary area.

The following day, the gravity of the situation sunk in as a large press crowd gathered at the synagogue for the Saturday morning service. The rise in anti-Jewish and Islamophobic incidents in Australia since the Israel-Gaza war outbreak in 2023 has been a cause for concern.

Meltzer emphasized that the recent incident signifies a dangerous shift from hate speech to violence, posing a significant threat to the community. Leaders from both sides of the Australian political spectrum have condemned the attacks, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stating that such acts have no place in the country.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke labeled the incident as an “attack on Australia”, highlighting the harm caused to the Jewish community and the nation as a whole. The need to uphold peace and harmony among different faith communities in Australia was underscored amidst the aftermath of the distressing events.
