The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly considering trading veteran defenseman Mike Matheson this summer, following a major trade that brought Noah Dobson to the team. Insider Fran Seravalli discussed these rumors on the Kevin Karius Show, hinting at Matheson’s potential availability.

One of the main reasons behind the potential trade is Matheson’s contract situation. The 31-year-old is in the final year of an eight-year, $39 million deal he signed with the Florida Panthers in 2018, with a $4.88 million cap hit. With the Canadiens currently over the salary cap ceiling, moving Matheson could help alleviate some financial pressure.

Seravalli mentioned that the Canadiens have leverage in this situation, given their depth at the defense position. Players like Dobson, Lane Hutson, Kaiden Guhle, and Alexandre Carrier provide Montreal with options on the blue line. Additionally, young defenseman David Reinbacher could step up to fill Matheson’s role if needed.

However, there is still a chance that Matheson could remain with the Canadiens beyond this season. General Manager Kent Hughes expressed a desire to keep Matheson on the team, but it ultimately depends on whether Matheson is willing to accept a deal within Montreal’s budget. The recent departure of Joel Armia to the LA Kings due to contract negotiations serves as an example of the Canadiens’ approach to managing player contracts.

For now, Matheson is expected to be part of the Canadiens’ lineup for the upcoming season. But if a suitable trade offer presents itself or if Matheson’s contract demands are too high, Montreal may decide to move on from the veteran defenseman. Fans should keep an eye on developments in the coming months as the Canadiens make decisions regarding their roster.

In conclusion, the Montreal Canadiens are considering trading Mike Matheson this summer, but there is still a possibility that he could remain with the team based on contract negotiations. The team’s depth at defense and financial considerations will play a significant role in determining Matheson’s future in Montreal.
