Belgian banks are making a big move in the world of digital payments by joining the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and introducing the EPI’s digital wallet Wero to their customers next year. The five banks – Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and vdk bank – announced their participation in this initiative on Monday.

The EPI was established by European banks as a response to the dominance of U.S. payment giants Visa and Mastercard. This move signifies a shift towards a more independent and competitive European payment ecosystem.

However, the EPI has faced challenges in the past with some banks opting out of its network. Despite this, the participating Belgian banks are confident in the potential of the EPI and the benefits it can bring to their customers.

Bank Van Breda CEO Dirk Wouters emphasized the importance of integrating Wero into their services, stating that it will provide clients, including entrepreneurs and liberal professions, with a fast, secure, and intuitive way to manage their payments that aligns with their daily needs.

The EPI’s digital wallet Wero has already gained significant traction since its launch last year, boasting 40 million registered users across Belgium, France, and Germany. This highlights the growing popularity and adoption of digital payment solutions in Europe.

Overall, the involvement of Belgian banks in the EPI demonstrates their commitment to innovation and providing cutting-edge payment solutions to their customers. This move not only enhances the competitiveness of European banks in the global payment landscape but also offers customers a more convenient and secure way to manage their finances.

As the digital payments industry continues to evolve, partnerships like these will play a crucial role in shaping the future of banking and financial services. The integration of Wero into the offerings of these Belgian banks marks a significant step towards a more interconnected and efficient payment ecosystem in Europe.
