A 32-year-old man from Hazel Crest is currently in custody after allegedly robbing a woman on the lakefront trail near Belmont Harbor and injuring a police officer during his arrest. The incident took place on Monday, July 1, in the 3400 block of North Lake Shore Drive, close to the Belmont Harbor dog beach.

The robbery occurred when a couple stopped with their Divvy bikes along the lakefront trail. The suspect, identified as Coleman, attempted to grab one of the bikes before forcibly taking the woman’s red book bag. He yanked it from her back, breaking the straps in the process. Witnesses reported seeing Coleman move into the roadway and empty the bag’s contents, which included two sweaters and a pair of glasses. Unfortunately, the items were scattered by passing cars and blown into traffic, and the police were only able to recover the bag itself.

Coleman fled on foot across Lake Shore Drive and was later found in the median just south of Diversey Harbor. During his arrest, a Chicago police officer sustained a dislocated shoulder while attempting to subdue him. As a result, Coleman now faces charges of robbery, aggravated battery of a peace officer, and resisting arrest.

At a recent hearing, Judge Luciano Panici Jr. ordered Coleman to be detained in custody. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and the risks that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
