Elderly Man Attacks Woman with Cane on NYC Subway

An elderly man, identified as Leroy Davis, 75, attacked a woman on a southbound No. 5 train at the 86th Street station in Manhattan over the weekend. The victim, a 50-year-old woman, was chatting with another person when Davis approached her and told her to “shut up” before assaulting her with his cane.

The violent attack left the victim with multiple injuries, including a broken finger, cuts, and severe swelling on the left side of her face. She was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital for treatment, where she received medical care for her injuries.

After the attack, Davis fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by the police. He was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and harassment. Despite facing a felony assault charge, Davis was released on his own recognizance by Judge Pamela Goldsmith.

Prosecutors had recommended supervised release for Davis, citing his lack of prior arrests. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 14th.

The incident highlights the need for increased safety measures on public transportation and raises concerns about the handling of elderly offenders in the criminal justice system. As the case unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and providing support for vulnerable populations.
