Skincare is a booming industry, with countless products flooding the market and social media platforms like TikTok influencing trends. But amidst all the noise, how do consumers know which products actually work, especially during the summer months?

A recent study conducted by Northwestern Medicine sought to answer this question by identifying the most effective ingredients recommended by dermatologists for seven common skin concerns. The study found that mineral sunscreen is one of the top recommendations for protecting against wrinkles, redness, and dry skin. Retinoids, a vitamin A derivative, were also highly recommended for improving issues such as wrinkles, acne, dark spots, large pores, and oily skin.

Published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the study utilized a rigorous process called a Delphi consensus, where top dermatologists rated skincare ingredients on a scale of 1-9. After two rounds of scoring and expert discussion, only ingredients with strong agreement made the final recommended list.

Dr. Murad Alam, a dermatologist and surgeon at Northwestern Medicine, emphasized the importance of using the right ingredients for specific skin concerns and avoiding the temptation to overload the skin with too many products. He highlighted the significance of the study in providing clarity for both skincare professionals and everyday users in navigating the overwhelming array of skincare options available.

One of the key takeaways from the study is that not all skincare products undergo the same rigorous review process by regulatory bodies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This gap in oversight can make it challenging for consumers to determine the efficacy of different products, making studies like the one conducted by Northwestern Medicine invaluable.

As consumers continue to prioritize skincare in their daily routines, having access to evidence-based recommendations from experts can help guide their choices and improve the overall health of their skin.
