Being A Picky Eater Could Be Genetic: Study

Picky eating is a common behavior among children, with some kids being more selective about what they eat than others. A recent study has shed light on the fact that picky eating is not just a phase that children go through, but rather a genetic trait that can persist well into adulthood. The study, conducted by Zeynep Nas and colleagues from UCL Behavioural Science & Health, looked at the eating habits of 2,400 sets of twin children and their parents over a span of 13 years.

The researchers found that genetic influences play a significant role in shaping children’s eating behaviors, with some children being more predisposed to picky eating than others. This genetic predisposition means that interventions to address picky eating may need to be more targeted and personalized. It also means that parents should not blame themselves for their child’s picky eating habits, as it is not a result of poor parenting.

Despite picky eating being largely innate, the study authors emphasized that interventions can still be implemented to help children broaden their food preferences. A diverse diet that includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods is important for overall health and nutrition. Picky eating can sometimes lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients, so it is important to address this behavior early on.

The study also highlighted the fact that early detection and intervention for picky eating in toddlers may prevent the persistence of this behavior into adolescence and adulthood. Picky eating has been linked to other health outcomes, including eating disorders like avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), so addressing it early on is crucial.

In conclusion, picky eating is not just a passing phase that children go through. It is a genetic trait that can persist into adulthood if not addressed early on. Parents should not blame themselves for their child’s picky eating habits, but instead focus on implementing targeted interventions to help broaden their child’s food preferences. A diverse diet is essential for overall health and nutrition, so it is important to address picky eating early to prevent any long-term consequences.
