In an unexpected twist at the somber occasion of Jimmy Carter’s funeral, three political journalists have uncovered the lighthearted exchange that led to former President Barack Obama erupting in laughter during the service. The funeral, held in January at Washington National Cathedral, marked the passing of the revered 100-year-old ex-president.
During the ceremony, C-SPAN captured a rather striking moment: Trump and Obama, sitting side by side, engaged in a brief but animated conversation, eliciting a chuckle from Obama that raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, particularly given the former president’s historically frosty relationship with Trump.
The plot thickened when Vice President Kamala Harris, seated in front of the two men, noticed their exchange. Her demeanor shifted to one of discontent, possibly sensing that they were sharing a laugh at her expense. However, it turns out they were discussing something entirely unrelated to her. Axios managed to obtain an excerpt from “2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America,” a book by Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf, revealing that Trump had playfully invited Obama to join him for a round of golf, showcasing his global golfing empire.
“He sat next to Barack Obama and invited him to play golf, enticing him with descriptions of Trump’s courses around the world,” the book notes. According to the Daily Mail, Trump owns a total of 15 golf courses, with 11 located in the United States, alongside two in Scotland, one in Ireland, and another in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
One can only imagine the spectacle of a golf match between these two political heavyweights at one of Trump’s opulent courses. Yet, despite the tempting offer, Obama declined the invitation. Was it a fear of defeat, or perhaps a classic case of spousal veto? One might ponder what could have been—a historic golfing showdown that might have shifted the narrative on their relationship.
