Expanded Eye, the artistic duo comprised of Jade Tomlinson and Kevin James, is blurring the lines between abstraction and figuration in their recent works. Their pieces delve into themes of the divine feminine and the peaceful power of the Earthmother, creating a mesmerizing blend of geometric and figurative elements. Known for their bold compositions that incorporate wood and repurposed materials, Expanded Eye’s artistry shines through in both large-scale installations and framed pieces where texture, pattern, and color take center stage.

While the duo has temporarily shifted their focus from their signature tattoo practice to sculptural reliefs, ceramics have become a central medium in their work. Inspired by the rich tile tradition of Portugal, known as azulejo, Tomlinson and James are using this ancient material to depict serene guardians in earth tone colors, aiming to evoke stillness and calm in our fast-paced world.

In their compositions, past and present converge as Expanded Eye channels an interest in timelessness and the continuum of clay, carving, and building methods. Drawing inspiration from early 20th-century art historical Modernism, particularly the Cubist movement, the artists create a fusion of traditional materials with a unique modern approach, connecting the past to the present in a harmonious blend.

Currently working on their largest tile commission to date, Expanded Eye plans to further integrate ceramics with other facets of their practice. Their website and Instagram provide a glimpse into their evolving artistry, showcasing the intricate details and captivating beauty of their work.

From abstract tile compositions to wall installations made of wood in various patterns, colors, and textures, Expanded Eye’s artistry is a testament to their creative vision and dedication to pushing the boundaries of traditional mediums. With each piece, they invite viewers to explore the intersection of art, culture, and history, creating a dialogue between past and present that resonates with a sense of timelessness and beauty.
