A Man with a History of Felony Convictions Arrested for Fatal Shooting in Chicago

A man with a long history of felony convictions has been detained after prosecutors said he shot and killed a longtime acquaintance directly in front of a Chicago police surveillance camera on the Near North Side.

Obbie Sanders, 49, who has a history of felony convictions and walks with a cane and wears leg braces due to previous gunshot injuries, was arrested for the fatal shooting of 46-year-old Darrin Carter on the Near North Side. The incident took place in broad daylight, with Sanders parking his Audi Q7 in the 800 block of North Cambridge around 9:38 a.m.

According to prosecutors, Sanders approached Carter’s vehicle and fired multiple shots at him, striking him in the back. The entire incident was captured on multiple police surveillance cameras in the area, providing crucial evidence for the case.

After the shooting, Carter sought help from nearby police officers but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Sanders was later seen returning to his vehicle, where two individuals took an object from the car and fled the scene.

Sanders then led police on a high-speed chase, driving recklessly and causing multiple collisions before finally crashing into a cement barrier and being arrested at the scene. Investigators recovered evidence linking Sanders to the crime, including shell casings and bullets found in his vehicle.

Despite Sanders’ criminal record, which includes convictions for various felonies, he has not made any admissions regarding the shooting. Judge John Hock granted the state’s petition to detain Sanders pending trial on charges of first-degree murder and murder committed during the course of a forcible felony.
