Lasovsky Johansson Architects, a design studio founded by Juráš Lasovský and Hanna Johansson, has created a stunning pavilion called “PETAL” using timber and canvas folding chairs. Originally conceived as an installation hosting an oyster bar at an art fair in 2023, PETAL is now on display in the courtyard of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen.

The studio’s mission is to create beautiful projects rooted in their surroundings, with a focus on civic spaces like schools, cultural centers, and public squares. PETAL is a testament to their innovative approach, featuring a playful and kinetic structure made up of 108 deck chairs arranged in a cylindrical form. During the day, the chairs open up to create a blooming effect, while in the evening, they can be collapsed to form a solid surface that doubles as a screen for color projections.

One of the main goals of the design was to use an everyday product in a new and creative way while maintaining its original functionality. The lightweight and easy-to-assemble nature of the deck chairs makes PETAL a versatile and functional space that also serves as an art object, inviting visitors to experience it from all angles.

Currently, Lasovsky Johansson Architects is working on a contemporary design for the new Museum of Forest Finn Culture in Svullrya, Norway. To explore more of their projects, visit their website and Instagram. PETAL is a testament to their creativity and commitment to creating unique and engaging spaces that blend art and functionality seamlessly.

Photos of PETAL by Astrid Maria Rasmussen and Aleksandre Andghuladze showcase the beauty and versatility of this innovative pavilion. The use of simple materials like timber and canvas folding chairs transformed into a dynamic and visually striking structure is a testament to the studio’s design philosophy and commitment to creating inspiring spaces.

By transforming everyday materials into a dynamic and visually striking structure, the studio has created a space that is both functional and visually engaging. Visit the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen to experience PETAL for yourself and see how art and architecture can come together to create something truly unique.
