The brutal attack on a 60-year-old woman at a Queens subway station shocked the community and led to a maximum sentence for the perpetrator. William Blount was convicted of robbery, assault, and attempted murder in the vicious assault that took place on February 24, 2022. The judge, John Zoll, handed down a sentence of 25 years to life in prison for Blount, acknowledging the severity of the crime.

During the sentencing, Judge Zoll commended the victim, Nina Rothschild, for her strength and resilience in the face of such a horrific attack. He praised her honesty, decency, and the fact that she stayed strong despite the ordeal. The judge expressed disbelief at the level of violence inflicted on Rothschild, noting that Blount, who is three times her size, kicked her and struck her in the head 13 times with a hammer until she fell.

In a rare move, Judge Zoll decided to give Blount the maximum sentence, citing the extreme nature of the crime and the impact it had on the victim. He emphasized the need for justice to be served in cases of such brutality. Blount’s lawyer, Garnett Sullivan, attempted to paint his client in a more sympathetic light by claiming that Blount considered Rothschild to be a “nice lady” during her testimony at the trial.

The courtroom scene painted a stark contrast between the heinous actions of the perpetrator and the resilience of the victim. The judge’s strong words towards Blount underscored the severity of the attack and the consequences that come with such violent behavior. The sentencing served as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and seeking justice for the victims of such senseless violence.
